Experimental focus

Hands-on, data-driven research

Every project is built around a real study — you'll be working with genuine data and stimuli from day one, not a simulated exercise.

  • Projects are hands-on and data-driven
  • Conducted in-person or online, depending on the study
  • Use of realistic stimuli (e.g., face databases, forensic materials, video games)
  • Can use eyetracking, either in the lab or with wearable eyetracking glasses
  • Can follow up on past student or published research

What to expect

Experience all stages of experimental research

01

Design

Collaborate to shape your research question and method.

02

Data collection

Run experiments with participants.

03

Analysis

Learn to use tools like JAMOVI, R, and/or GraphPad — training provided.

04

Interpretation

Connect findings to theory and real-world applications.

Student experience

Support along the way

You'll have regular contact with your supervisor throughout the project, and you don't need any prior research skills to get started.

  • Weekly supervision meetings
  • No prior skills required — just enthusiasm

Research themes

Research themes & current and past projects

Face & person recognition

How do we identify and remember faces?

Current and past projects:

  • Super-recognisers: who are they and how do they work?
  • "Where do I know you from?" — familiarity and face memory
  • Detecting AI-generated faces

Memory & critical incidents

What factors affect eyewitness memory?

Current and past projects:

  • Memory recall after critical incidents (e.g., video game simulations)
  • Memory contamination on repeated event recall

Forensic science

Improving fairness and reliability in criminal investigations

Current and past projects:

  • Fingerprint comparison skills
